So after many many hours of gawking at maps I’ve finally nailed the TGO 2022 route! This year we’re walking castle to castle, starting at Dornie (Eilean Castle) and heading to Lunan Bay (Red Castle) just south of Montrose.
A Friday start takes us from Dornie through Glen Affric to Cougie Lodge before dropping south into Fort Augustus for a day 3 restock. A lengthy windfarm track bash on to the Monadhliath but rather than a Chalybeate Springs “cocktail party”, we’re heading North up to Stonelairg lodge and over to Aviemore for another restock. Hopefully we get a clement weather window that allows us to take the Lairig Ghru onto Ben MacDui and down into Derry Lodge, otherwise we’ll take the River Feshie and Linn of Dee to Braemar (an equally brilliant route). Callater Lodge follows Braemar with hopefully another lucky weather window to allow us to take the Jocks Road to Clova. Failing that, it will be a rollocking slog to Queens bothy (Glas-allt-Shiel) or a cheeky hop (not FWA friendly) over Broad Cairn, but I’m holding out for Jocks road (how bad can it be right?). Leaving Clova from Loch Brandy over a few more hills (White Hill, The Goet, Dog Hillock etc) and down to the small Glenogil reservoir. Then the road bashing commences with hopefully a few beers along the way to the East Coast via Friockheim.
By my calculations and assuming we dont take any of the escape routes, the total distance will be around 300km and total ascent of 8200m.
So subject to vetters approval we have a route!
